Our heritage

From a 1985 vision to South Africa's auction college

In the wake of the 1985 recession, Col. Hedley Harris travelled over 12,000 miles to the United States to study the craft at the Worldwide College of Auctioneering. He returned with a vision — and in 1986 opened the doors of the South African College of Auctioneering, laying the foundation for a structured, professional approach to the trade.

Founder of Hedley Harris Auctioneers and bearer of the respected title "Colonel", he has trained over 50,000 students and was inducted into the SAIA Hall of Fame for Education in 2011. Today the Harris family carries that craft forward — training the next generation of South African auctioneers.

"An auctioneer is a marketing expert and a problem-solver — not just someone counting numbers."

What our graduates say

From the classroom to the rostrum

Real graduates, real auctions — here's what students have gone on to do after training with us.

I was retrenched after 9½ years with an auction company, so I decided to go into the auction business myself. We started with small auctions — and in November we sold a farm for R3.8 million and the assets for R630,000, then in January we auctioned a guest house in Vryheid for R880,000. We are so blessed. Thank you for everything you taught me.

I always told myself the bidding calls were easy — until I found the real truth through uncle Hedley. Thank you for all your teachings and encouragement; I'll never forget it.

Themba LetsweleAuctioneering graduate

Just a word of thanks for the course — I thoroughly enjoyed it, meeting new people and exchanging ideas. Your course content is excellent, covering every aspect of the auctioneering business.

GregAuctioneering graduate

Very many thanks for an excellent course — not only professionally put together, with very clear documentation and slides, but of enormous interest. Your drive and motivation, even when I got the basic numbers wrong, were very encouraging. I feel totally motivated by this new venture.

Prof. Sandi WardAuctioneering graduate
